Recently, we received a call from the hospital about a baby born on Christmas day. After delivery, her biological mom showed no interest in bonding with the baby and soon left the hospital without her.
Just a few days old and alone, the baby remained at the hospital while being treated for drug exposure and other medical issues. We contacted the Martinez family, one of our newer foster families, and asked if they would consider taking the baby. Immediately the foster mom asked to be allowed to visit the baby at the hospital. For over ten days, she would visit the hospital to hold the baby, feed her, pray over her and sing to her.
For the first time, this baby girl felt loved and wanted. The doctors shared that because of the nurturing and bonding of the foster mom, the baby was showing an amazing recovery in a very short time. And because of the courage of this family and their commitment to impact the life of this child, the 16-day-old baby was released into their loving care.
Today, almost two months old, the baby whose name is Faith, is thriving with her new family – a family that has changed her life!
The call about baby Faith wasn’t unusual. At least twice a day, the phone at His House Children’s Home rings with a caller who is looking to place a child who needs a safe, caring place to live.
Sadly, many times the answer we must give is that the beds on our campus are full and we do not have enough foster families to meet the increased need. It breaks my heart to tell you that in 2016, we had to turn away nearly 1,000 children.
Right now, The Batchelor Foundation of Miami wants to be a part of the solution. They have offered a $100,000 Challenge Grant to help us expand this vital program.
The children of South Florida need your help today more than ever before – please make a gift right now to our foster care program online at www.hhch.org.
